December
31, 1999/January 1, 2000: Millennium Marathon
Our
"real" New Year's Eve party seems to have happened on Saturday, January 1st,
as a lot of you who decided to heed warnings to stay home came out in force
the following day. But for those who made it out on New Year's, Eminem
gave an incredible performance. He joked with the crowd about not being
allowed to bring in "his guns," and "his drugs." Here our backstage camera
catches him grabbing a drink before heading back towards the crowd.
December 25, 1999: Kurfew Kristmas
The Kurfew Kristmas party
on 12/25/99 was a reunion of sorts, with some long-missed Kurfew patrons and
staff returning from faraway parts of the country. They included Karly
Kani (jock turned drag queen), now residing in Los Angeles, and wannabe drag
Kirsten.
December
18, 1999: Lovari
Lovari performed
his new song, "These
Tears" on December 18th along with his
backup dancers while Peppermint Gummybear gave a chair-flying performance
as she lip-sync-battled the lovely Vicki Lake over a man. Sounds like
business as usual for those two drag queens! Here's where Peppermint
tells off her cheatin' man before the chairs start flying.
December
11, 1999: Kurfew Dance Krew
Everyone had
a blast on December 11th, with a special performance by the Kurfew Dance Krew,
and lots of cuties beginning to return home to NY for the holidays.
December 4, 1999: "Neverland 2000"
The December 4th "Neverland 2000" party was lots of fun, with DJ Peter Pan
(San Francisco) manning the tables in the new and improved Chandelier Room
along with special guest DJs and MC Gadget.
November
27, 1999: Sara Brenner
November
27th brought an end to the Thanksgiving holiday week with many familiar faces
returning to NY to party at their favorite nightspot. Recording Artist
Sara Brenner blew away the packed room with three of her popular tunes "Curious,"
"Laugh," and "You Don't Know Me." The event was the first time in the
history of the Kenny Scharf room that a full live band played. Sara's
future NYC appearances are detailed on her website at www.sarabrenner.com.
November 6, 1999: Madonna Video Release Party
No
artist comes close to Madonna in ability to bring out the city's cutest
boys, and everyone had lots of fun at her Video Release Party on November
6th. We gave away posters, collectible Rolling Stone magazines
(featuring Madonna on the cover) and memberships to Madonna's official fan
club, ICON.
As the contest took place on the Main Stage, Jen Pussy-Lee spun her happy homo house to a huge crowd on the Runway, DJ Kitsch spun 80s and 90s to a packed Kenny Scharf room, and DJ Peter Pan opened up our newest dance room, the two-level Chandelier Room, which features Jungle and Progressive Trance. That means three simultaneous dance floors within the Kurfew section alone! .
November
20, 1999: Kurfew welcomes singer/songwriter ARI GOLD
from "Latin
Boy Go To Hell," and contributor to Kevin Aviance's new CD, "Box
of Chocolates."
Ari
Gold delivered a solid gold performance at our November 20th party with his
delicious soul pop music. We expect to hear some big things coming from this
promising young artist.
November
13, 1999: Kurfew celebrates the opening of LET'S
EAT COOKIE
DOUGH
a melodramatic
comedy about Love, Lingerie and Chocolate Chips
Our November
13th party for the new play,"Let's Eat Cookie Dough," was lots of fun.
We gave away plenty of cookies (we figured cookie dough might get a bit messy)
as well as free tickets to this melodrama about "Love, Lingerie and Chocolate
Chips." Pictured here in the Kenny Scharf room, from left to right, is cast
member Karen Wooley (plays Kaytie), producer Jason Scott, Kurfew's Jeff, writer/director
Stephen Schulman, and cast member Even Greenberg (plays Tristan).
October
30, 1999: "Blare Bitch Project"
Our Halloween party was a blast on October 30th as Kurfew's "Blare Bitch Project" drew out one of our biggest crowds ever. We were amazed at how many cute boys we were able to find despite being hidden behind often elaborate costumes.
October 23, 1999: Kurfew celebrates
the release of the new Eurythmics album, PEACE. Our October 23rd
Eurythmics party brought out a super crowd who danced to some of their latest
songs, and watched the Eurythmic's new and classic videos.
If you have Real Player
installed on your browswer,

(sample

).We
gave away lots of CD albums, singles and posters thanks to Arista Records.
Were you among the lucky winners???
Top five "Winner's Techniques"
for getting a prize at the message board:
(1) Scream, jump and wave hands
vigorously, removing non-essential articles of clothing if necessary, to get
message board staff attention.
(2) Scream something relevant
to the prize being offered (e.g. "Dammit, I Love Annie Lennox!!!")
(3) Beg (this seems to work
well with the message board staff if you're particularly cute)
(4) Cry (this may even convince
another prize winner to forfeit his prize to you)
(5) Stand attentive, head elevated
yet relaxed, while outstretching hand calmly and assuredly toward the desired
prize, without fainting
October
9, 1999: Kurfew celebates the release of Tori Amos' new double-CD, "To Venus
and Back"
October 9th was another packed
party as we celebrated the release of the new Tori Amos album, "to venus and
back."
Kurfew Kweens Peppermint Gummybear, BeBe, Mabel-Lean and Vicki Lake served as
the welcoming committee for the bigwigs from Atlantic Records. We gave aways
lots of CD albums and singles, as well as Tori's complete video collection,
courtesy of Atlantic Records. Five lucky Kurfew patrons also received a limited
edition , serial-numbered Tori Amos lithograph...only 10,000 were produced for
the entire country.
The key to winning one: you had to know the name of Tori's newest album, which
was not a problem for the cute fans assembled that night.
September
4, 1999: Kurfew Welcomes DJ Jen Pussy-Lee
The crowded September 4th "Pussy
Party" was a reunion of sorts as many Kurfew boys & girls who came back
to NYC from their summer breaks came to celebrate with DJ Jen Pussy-Lee, shown
here with an autographed Pussy album prize-winner. There
were tons of cute guys and gals, like these...
We also noticed some cute couples, like these:
In
the midst of everything, we noticed the normally stunningly-dressed BeBe running
around half-naked screaming while wearing what one clubgoer described as a "Homemade
Hand-Wrapped Toilet-Paper Emergency Miniskirt." Is this what happens to drag
queens when they lose their fashion sense? Here's the picture, maybe you can
figure it out!
While DJ Jen Pussy-Lee spun her sexually charged hits on Kurfew's Runway with
cohorts DJ Roman and DJ Acme, the lovely Miss Cat Thing gracefully brought some
pussy to the dance floor. MEOW, BABY!
Kurfew's previous week's event,
August 28th, was packed as well, as many boys & girls celebrating their
last weekend of fun before jetting off to faraway schools collided with the
busloads of newbies coming into New York City. Expect a lot of new faces
in the coming weeks as tens of thousands of new students discover "America's
Largest Young Gay Dance Party," and especially at next week's KURFEW FRESHMEN
ORIENTATION party! Drag hostess BeBe was in much better form last weekend in
her fabulous neon pink mermaid-inspired body suit.
Some of you may have noticed Mr. Silk Flag Dancer,
if
not for his gracefully flowing moves, then as you were being whacked across
the head and neck with his flags. Another Kurfew patron informed us that
these were not silk flags at all, but actually "giant sticky boy nets."
We'll check back next week to see what he catches!
August
21, 1999: The 1999 Miss Kurfew Pageant
We were impressed with the
diversity of the boys who decided to try out for the contest, We knew we had
a winner on our hands when the sexy and shapely Miss Alexis was showered with
wild primal screams from straight boys watching the main stage finalist round.
(The main stage, as many of you know, is located within the "straight" section
of the club, where Kurfew occasionally features performances, drag shows, and
contests.) The thought of those hunky straight guys and their raw, sexually-inspired
noises for their fellow males on stage (whether they realized they were looking
at males or not) was quite a sight (and sound). Of course, the gay boys
were cheering as well, but with more of that polite and restrained "You
can do it, Sister!" enthusiasm. Our main stage photographs of some of
the contestants will appear on the site shortly, but meanwhile here's a digital
pic of the winner, Miss Alexis, the new Miss Kurfew 1999!
Miss Alexis scored the highest among the five finalists who competed in such
categories as lip-synching, style, make-up and sex appeal while performing
in front of a crowd of about 4,000 people. Miss Alexis was given a bouquet
of flowers from Kurfew's drag queen judges, as well as her beautiful faux-everything
tiara. The "often-imitated never duplicated" Miss Vicki Lake is shown here demonstrating
the facial expression that is least recommended when competing in the
Miss Kurfew Pageant, the Miss Ameria Pageant, or any beauty-related event, for
that matter.
August
7, 1999: Kurfew's Hottest Swimsuit Competition
August 7th was our Hottest
Swimsuit Competition, and many heeded our "Undress to Impress" call...some almost
took that too literally. The winner will be modeling Kurfew's Summer 2000
Swimwear Line. Here were some of the judges:
As you can see, the contestants
knew how to work the stage...
Donald and Ms. Face strike
poses with the winner...
July
31, 1999: Movie Release Party for the New Flick, "Trick"
July 31st was our special movie
release party for the fabulous new flick, TRICK and what a great party it was!
First came the Open Bar introducing Blavod Black Vodka for our 21+ crowd.
Blavod is a really cool black-colored Vodka that tastes like ordinary Vodka,
except that because it's colored, you can actually see the Vodka floating in
the drinks. Simply wild! Le Vin de Coeur Rosé wine also donated
their unique wine packaged in bottles with female couples or male couples on
the labels!
July
24, 1999: Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot Record Release Party
This weekend we had a blast
giving away HUNDREDS of CDs, and other goodies from Elektra Entertainment, as
we celebrated the launch of Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot's new album, DA REAL
WORLD, featuring "She's a Bitch!"
July 17,
1999: Become a "Cartoon Character" and meet XY Cartoonist Russ Turk
Kurfew featured XY Cartoonist
and "Queer Boys" creator Russ Turk providing Kurfew mini-editions of his newest
Vanilla Bitch comic book. Russ also took the time to
turn some Kurfew patrons into their own cartoon characters.
April 24, 1999: Kurfew Kasting Kall!
This Saturday, April 24th,
it's a Kurfew Kasting Kall as Lilliput Pictures and Waterbearer Films hold an
audition for the lead young gay character, and gay teen extras for the new Lilliput
Pictures/Waterbearer Films short film, "Birthday Time." Waterbearer Films
is also the distributor of the successful gay film, Trevor. Sign up for
the audition at the Message Board Table. Here are the characters they
are seeking:
Christopher is a 17
year old gay, high school student. He's the nerdy drama student sort,
a little neurotic, who's much cuter than he realizes. He most likely wears
glasses and is preferably under 5'9"
Tom is the 45ish married
gay man, closeted, very handsome, masculine, perhaps a little smarmy.
Think Tom Selleck or Tom Skerrit.
Sarah is Christopher's
single mother. Also about 45 years old. She's intelligent and dry.
Can have European background/accent.
A 23 to 30ish bartender,
40ish barfly, and numerous high school extras are also sought.
April 17, 1999: Kurfew celebrates the chart-topping success of Tori Amos' Remixes
Kurfew's Tori Amos event (joining Atlantic Records in celebrating the chart-topping success of Tori Amos' latest remixes off her album, "From the Choirgirl Hotel") was a great success! We played her latest remixes, showed her latest videos, and handed out lots of CD's and albums!
April
10, 1999: LINDA SIMPSON
Saturday,
April 10th brought LINDA SIMPSON to Kurfew. Linda made her playwrighting
debut in 1997 with THE TRANNY CHASE, which earned her a Glammy Award
for Best Writing. You've probably seen this award-winning drag playwright
& performer in one of her many roles on stage, television and movies (including
To Wong Foo...) and she plans to give the Kurfew Krowd some tasty tid-bits
from her new show on "The Gay 90's" called THE FINAL EPISODE. In the
show, Linda plays herself as hostess of the last episode of the talk show,
"The Gay 90's." Her guests include serial killer Andrew Cunanan and Greg Louganis
and comedy skits by the Happy Homosexuals. The show touches upon the most
provocative issues of the 90's including gay marriage, the military, gay drug
culture, AIDS, etc. Paper Magazine has called Linda,"the thinking woman's
drag queen...Vanna White with wit."
Cunta Kinte's song makeovers were quite a blast on April 3rd, as were the action-packed performances of the Kurfew Drag Queens. For those of you who missed Cunta, it's too bad we can't print any samples of her lyrics or song titles or this site would be immediately barred by all of those expletive language filters.
March 27, 1999: "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Gay Man" - Exhibit by Réné Capone
March 20,
1999: Meet Abby Denson, Creator of the "Tough Love" Comic Strip with Lookalike
Contest!
Our March 20th party was also
quit a hit. We selected winners for Abby Denson's "Tough Love" look-alike contest,
and some of the winners bear an uncanny resemblance to the cartoon characters!
We were quite surprised. Here's a picture of the winners posing with Abby,
center. They're surrounded by their cartoon characters! Stay tuned..these
winners will be turned into a collectible Kurfew edition of "Tough Love" Trading
Cards!
Let's
not forget, we also gave aways tons of CD's and T-shirts for an incredible new
band called Tin Star, courtesy of V2 Records. You may have seen their
wild video on MTV or on Kurfew's Runway Screens. As you can see below,
the scene was chaotic once we started handing stuff out!
