To be sure, this guy has behaved poorly. Chances are that he is probably confused and hence the mixed messages, but that is really no excuse. Now that you know the facts, however, the ball is in your court to decide how this will turn out. It is possible to love more than one person, and it is possible to love someone without being physically intimate. If you are uncomfortable being the side dish, then why don't you just have a platonic relationship with him(non sexual). Tell him that you can't be phsycial with him until he is ready to commit to you. Otherwise, get used to being part of a package of three.
