Wow, it has been an eventful summer for you, but mostly it all sounds like good stuff. Supportive best friend, mother who takes interest in your life...
I think you should have told her the truth. If she is asking these questions she obviously 1) has her suspicions and 2)is ready to hear the answer no matter how much therapy she made need. Most people have such a hard time brining it up to their parents, you should feel lucky that your mother brought it up to you.
