From the sound of things, this is your first gay relationship. He's obviously not fully comfortable with his gay side (whether he's gay or bisexual) because he keeps letting you know that it "needs to stop." But obviously his feelings and emotions tell him not to stop.

It makes sense to give this relationship some time. The two of you need to get more comfortable with each other, more accepting of yourselves, and more understanding and accepting of your own sexual orientation. If your friend is struggling with conflicts over whether he is gay or not, telling him you "love" him might make things more complicated, or might push him away altogether.

So give it some time, work on building the comfort level between you, and write us back to let us know how it goes!
