Some girlfriend answers...

Even educated, well-intentioned parents often lack the maturity and knowledge to deal with gay children. Throw in some homophobic religiosity, and it becomes a major challenge to win acceptance from such parents, especially when you're particularly young.

Being cast off to Florida away from your girlfriend is not something that will benefit anybody, so it makes sense to keep your sexuality from your mom at this time. You'll know when the time is right to "come out" to her, but for now you're going to be strong and find support from your girlfriend and among cool, carefully selected peers.

As far as your girlfriend comparing you to her ex, let her know that you don't like the comparison. It shouldn't be a combative discussion; simply let her know that you are not Paigne. Regardless of whether you think her ex is prettier, you have the chance to make a different positive impression on your girlfriend that she will remember for a long time.

Good luck!
