At the risk of sounding "too calculating", I think you need a game plan. I understand and remember how delicate things are in HS, trying to conceal your identity while also trying to explore your identity...Anyway, I think you should say something neutral and test his reaction. If he is interested, he will probably present the opportunity for a further conversation, you can at least attempt to gage his interest in talking to you.

Why don't you try going up to him the next time you see him, and he doesn't seem to busy, and ask" I was just curious why you wanted to know my last name?", when he replies you can even make a joke like, "oh, good so you're not with the police", this will let him know that your mood is light-hearted and not suspicious. See how he reacts, maybe prepare some back up questions in case he seems interested in conversing (what grade are you in?...etc) I think this is a good way of proceeding with caution.
