Based on your description, it sounds possible that he's gay. But he could also just be a mature-acting, confident straight person, so keep that it mind. In either case, it might be worth your time to pursue a friendship with him since he doesn't seem like the type of person who would react negatively or who would go about telling the school that you're gay.

Pursuing a friendship allows you to get to know him better and get more of the clues to figure him out. Friendship is also the ideal first step to a relationship.
