Fabulous? Huh?

Well.. the heading of this post maybe somewhat confusing. Yes... I am interested in "Fabulous"... yet not so much with its eytomology; My question bears more so with the word itself... and its relevance to the gay community. What I'm wondering is this: why and when was this word adopted into gay scene lingo? It's almost become a gay idiom. Every gay man I speak to... has said it at least at one point.. maybe in mockery... but that's neither here nor there. What's of issue, is that it is quite prevelant. And why? Why.. it's so... trite.. so silly an expression... I guess it's something our own.. in a sense.. so we declaim in an avowal of our gayness. But still... I can't STAND the word. It's like a buzzword... a "fabulous party"... a "fabulous night"... What the hell is that supposed to mean? Blah... this is becoming some derailed screed... so... I gues.. i should shutup now. Anywayz... if you could tell me... at what point in gay histoy.. this word seeped into popular usage... I would appreciate it.
