Only child - should I come out???

I have grown up in the closet during my life in the small town where I grew up. Coming out of the closet was very detrimental to my best friend so I decided to wait and see how things played out toward my last years of high school.

Well now I have no doubt about my sexuality but I'm stuck in a bind. I'm the only child of my family and I think it would be devastating to come out to them. My mother's family has dealt with the issue before since my first cousin is a lesbian and my second cousin died of AIDS in 1996. My father's family I fear would shun me.

Coming out is imminent I will be attending a very diverse and gay-friendly college in six months and I do not intend to deprive myself of a healthy relationship since the attitudes of my town has done that job for me for the last six years.

I would appreciate any advice.
