I want more than a friend

I have this great friend that I love hanging out with. We are so alike in almost everyway. He is the one that introduced me into the gay world. For the most part I am a virgin to gay sex. The other night we went out and had alot of fun. When we got back to his house, I asked him to be my first. He turned me down saying that if he were my first it would ruin our friendship and I would end up hateing him because somehow he would break my heart and end up hurting me. I feel the total opposite, I feel that our friendship is very strong, we have some strange bond that brought us together and I have have shared alot with him and have gotten very close to him. I feel that sleeping together would only bring us closer. Please help...this is all I have been thinking about. I care very deeply for him and want us to take that next step. What should I do?
