In Answer To: Advice Needed For Coming Out... (Kristal)

The best thing to do before coming out to your parents is to prepare for the worst. If you're dependent upon them for housing or food, and you know that they are very religious or intolerant people, you might choose to continue "living the lie," until you're self-supporting. I've read about lots of kids who have gotten thrown out of the house after coming out. If you have gotten the sense that your parents will be more open minded and supportive, then go ahead with it! But make plans with a close friend in the event that things don't turn out the best. And if things work out, so much the better! Coming out can be a remarkably positive experience over the long-term. It's just a difficult thing to do at first! GOOD LUCK!
