If you both feel that the relationship is working in other ways then I think you should try a compromise. By being treated like "the girl", do you mean that you each want to be protected and have attention showered upon you? I don't know if that is the healthiest thing to crave to being with. Maybe the two of you could learn how to be emotionally strong from eachother. I wouldn't get too caught up in "roles", you will likely miss out on some great opportunities.
