Committed Partner with a problem

I am in a relationship and have been for almost 8 years. Lately we have been talking about making the partnership more formal. We do love each other and are monogamous. However we have one problem. Beause of some past history of abuse to my partner he will not engage in anal sex in either role. While I am very diversified and feel that this is something which is needed to i guess sort of consumate the relationship. The worst part is that he has closed off a whole part of himself to expression, but in the past has not, with others. I am looking for advice on how to help him relax and put this guy from his past out of his mind and go with what he has.
