While hearing people have no obligation to learn sign language, it would probably be nice if they did. Personally I am in the process of learning ASL, I find it enjoyable and am excited to be able to one day use it in a social situation (as opposed to a classroom situation). Communication is the most important part of a relationship which is a major handicap for deaf people. I think that it is ridiculous to expect the deaf community to date only amongst themselves, but it is difficult to find people who are willing to learn how to sign. I wish I could give you more hope, but right now it doesn't seem that gay men are rushing out to learn sign. Don't worry though, the really cool ones are =) Good Luck and be cool.
