It's good that you realize that the stereotypes that you (and others) might interpret as indicating gayness might really only be the mark of someone with an individualistic flair. Even eye contact doesn't make it a sure thing. If you like this boy enough, you should at least have the guts to be ready to confront your schoolmates as to why you are talking to this boy, or befriending him. And that's exactly what I'd suggest: work on becoming his friend and then let the rest fall into place. As you get to know him better, you'll have a much better sense of his sexual orientation. If in the end he isn't gay, then at least you've broken some stereotypes and made a new friend.
