How Do I Know If He's Gay?

There's this guy at school, and everyone always says he's gay. I mean he dresses nice, and what not. But when he wears his pastel shirts or shirts labeled as "Bohemian", he is marked as being gay. He always used to stare at me too, infact he still does. I also heard from a friend of mine that wanted to know if I was gay(which I am, but I just wondered why). In truth, I still wonder why. So is he gay, bi, straight? Or is he just an individualist who's misleading me? If he is gay or even bi, how would I even begin to approach him about it without my whole school knowing?
