First of all, if your mom is "newly religious," that's better than if she had a strict religious upbringing since age 7. Before telling her outright, I'd test her out a bit by raising the issue and gauging her response. Perhaps talk about a recent gay issue in the news, and see how strongly she reacts. If you feel she'll take it well (you don't want to be thrown out of the house, after all!) you might start by encouraging her to keep the same open mind that led her to consider becoming religious. Perhaps you can tell her that interracial marriage, slavery and the subserviency of women were all things that at one time or another were justified by many by pointing to the bible. Times change, interpretations change. And though people will claim the bible's word is unchanging, history proves quite the opposite. The bible constantly changes to suit the science and interpretations of the times. As far as keeping her from feeling guilty, there's no reason in the world for her to feel guilty. If she feel's it's somehow her "fault," she needs to take some time to work through her own biases and learn more about the frequency and normalcy of homosexuality in humans.

With regard to coming to Kurfew, here are two suggestions. The first is to volunteer for a position. You'll immediately get the opportunity to befriend members of the Kurfew Krew, while getting the chance to work with the patrons that attend Kurfew. The other idea is to post a message on the Message Board looking for a friend to go with you to Kurfew. Once you do it one time, you likely won't have any problems coming back!
