Is keeping my sexuality private a good thing?

I go to a high school with about 700 students and it is located in a small town. Need-less-to-say that every one knows every ones business. It's like no one has anything better to do, or something.

I am comfortable with my life choices and how I am going to live my life. I am pretty much saying that I am bisexual with more of a taste for the same sex and I feel comfortable with that.

What I don't feel comfortable with is people knowing and assuming things about my life. THings that would hurt me. I don't want to end up the next Matthew Shepard. I am well known at shcool (knock on wood) and I don't want to spoil it with "coming out". I don't want people's oppinions to change about me. I am still the same person, but they would know more and even worse, assume more.

The bottom line of this is, should I just keep quiet about my sexuality until I move to a larger city where I feel people don't care as much? I feel it would be right for me to tell my closest friends, and is that even a good idea?
