I think it is nice that you want to be optimistic and hang on to any shred of hope, but let's be honest with ourselves! All of the signs are there. If he is interested in being friends I am sure he will make that clear, but if his actions indicate that he just isn't interested in a friendhsip, and I do believe that is the case, there is no reason that you should make this any more uncomfortable for either of you by demanding he says it to your face before you will leave him alone. Sorry man, you win some, you lose some =)
