Is my man gay??

My fiance/babys daddy has me a little worried. We have been together for 2 years, and I want so badly to be his wife. The thing is he jokes around with his friends in an inappropriate way. For example, ass slapping on occasion, constant gay jokes about them having sex. It's one friend in particular that he seems to do this with the most. I have asked him about it before, in a very calm understanding way. He laughs and jokes about it or just says 'no' and drops the conversation. He is a very private person when it comes to his feelings, so it's hard to tell. I think that I need to reassure him that regardless of his preference his son will always be his son and will always be encouraged to see him. I also want to reassure him that if he's gay then we'll just be best friends. I mean, hey, what's a wife, but a best friend. Is this the right way to go about finding the truth? If it is how do I tell him these things without offending him or putting him on the defense? If it's not the right way to find out, then what is?
