While there are literally gay people in EVERY small town in the USA, the problem with the type of town you describe is that openly gay people tend to move out as soon as they're able. This leaves successively few and fewer gay people at every increasing age range. The other problem with small towns, is there's not enough of a gay population to support the social services, coffee houses and the like that make for a vibrant gay community.

Gay clubs happen to be a primary means of meeting other gay people, so don't rule them out. But certainly the internet is your best bet for reaching out to others who may be close in proximity...or at least a tolerable drive.

If you're truly unhappy, and think that other cities would offer you more opportunities to meet other gay people, you should consider relocating. Having a "high salary" means nothing if you're wasting your life away feeling miserable in a boring town.
